I chose this topic because my family is my main support system and in effect, very important to me and my life. This got me to wondering what effects little to a lot of family time has on students today.
1) I found this video on youtube.com. It is a sarcastic video of how some family dinners "typically" go from a comedy movie, Talladega Nights. I give it a 5/5 for humor.
2) I found this video by typing in google search the term, family time and this church website on given courses came up. It is a brief example of how church going parents think family time and raising children should go. I give it a 3/5 because I don't really agree with their ideals in parenting.
3) I found this through google. It is an article on the importance of family dinner on kids. I give it a 4/5 because its quick and I believe family dinners can affect many aspects of kids lives.
Importance of Family Dinner Time: Interesting Statistics October 8, 2007 by chellejd Found the following mind-blowing statistics today. If you work with children or are a parent, take notice. • Family dinners have declined by one-third, based on the number of families who report that their whole family usually eats dinner together. But the rebound may have begun. A poll that tracked adolescents from 1998-2004 found a 28 percent increase in families having dinner together five or more times per week. Dr. Doherty has written the book Putting Family First: Successful Strategies for Reclaiming Famiy Life in A Hurry Up World. Doherty, W.J. (2002) Doherty stated: “For young children, meal time at home is a stronger predictor of academic achievement and psychological adjustment than time spent in any of the following activities: school, studying, sports, church/religious activities, or art activities. For teens, having regular dinners with parents is a strong predictor of academic success, psychological adjustment, and lower rates of alcohol use, drug use, early sexual behavior, eating disorders, and risk for suicide.”
4) I found this on youtube.com by doing a search for positive effects on kids in school that participate in family dinners. Its a video that uses a discussion style to give the benefits in many aspects of family time on kids and parents. I give it a 5/5 because it brings up good points and ideas.
5) I found this old, funny video on youtube.com. Its about quality family time but it is based in the fifties so it is funny to compare how much values have changed and how some issues stay the same. I give it a 4/5 for humor in my opinion.
6) I found an article on http://www.educationminnesota.org/en/community/dinner.aspx on the effects of family dinners on kids in school and better grades. I give it a 3/5 because its pretty basic and short but had a good statistic that got me interested.
Among several studies on the topic, Columbia University found that teens who ate dinner with their family were 40 percent more likely to score A’s and B’s than their peers whose families ate separately. You might not know how to help your kids with calculus but if you can make a mean meatloaf, that helps, too!
7) I found this powerpoint on slideshare.net. It is about how parents influence kids and should realize that in school sometimes kids aren't always treated fairly or attended to they way they should. I give it a 5/5 for bringing up very good points and wording the warning for parents very well.
8) I found this video on youtube.com. It is a speech made by president Obama about kids staying in school. Its an old message but a good reminder for parents to realize their part in inspiring kids to go to school and do well. I give it a 4/5 for his charm.
